About the artist
Liam Lynch An intrepid sleuth, Lynch endures whatever extremes he must in order to capture the story he is bound to tell us in his photographs.Making his expedition to Tonga in September 2010, Lynch spent 14 days communing with his subject in the deep, deep blue. Suspended underwater, his chest thrumming with the reverberation of whalesong, Lynch takes us all with him to the home of the giant. 'Breath' brings us a rare experience to be up close and personally immersed in the colour and scale of the Southern Humpback whale. We are right there - tiny, awestruck, curious. The reverence inherent in his images speaks of what we stand to lose from nature's great family and gives us a rare glimpse at the resounding beauty of these animals. Each image also gives us a glimpse of Lynch's passion. At the heart of his art Lynch holds a profound awareness of what it is he shows us: the precarious nature of these enormous lives, lived in shrinking seas. This exhibition is displayed at large scale to celebrate the gargantuan beauty of the subject. The works - like the whales - are both powerful and serene; mighty and gentle; massive and passive. |
